Wall cracking is a common problem in building decoration and house usage. It not only affects the appearance but also may damage the structural stability. Usually, cracks can happen in a few different ways as below:
1. Large cracks appear right after the putty dries.
2. Fine cracks show up if the wall is left unpainted for a while after applying putty.
3. Some areas on the same wall crack, while others don’t.
These cracks happen for different reasons. We need to use different solutions to solve them.

The causes of wall cracking
Cracks right after drying:
This is mainly because of the poor putty quality. Normally, the early-stage cracks happen due to the putty quality doesn’t meet industry standards. Low quality putty doesn’t have enough bonding strength.
Cracks after some time with putty unpainted:
Putty if made of redispersible polymer powder(RDP) and cement. If you don’t paint the surface soon after applying the putty, the water inside evaporates before the cement fully sets(hydrates). As it dries, the putty shrinks, and because the bonding isn’t strong enough, small cracks appear.
However, if you paint the surface in time, the paint helps retain moisture, allowing the cement to continue curing, this gives the putty film more strength and helps prevent cracks.
Cracks in some areas but other not in the same wall putty:
This usually means the putty layer was applied too thickly or unevenly. Thicker spots shrink more as they dry, which causes stress and cracks in those areas.
The solutions to prevent wall cracks
For cracks right after drying:
Use higher quality wall putty. That means increase the using amount of organic binders like redispersible polymer powder and cellulose fiber. These materials help the putty stay flexible and resist cracking during drying. Avoid using ultra-fine fillers(like very fine calcium carbonate), as they require more binder and can increase shrinkage, making cracks more likely.

For cracks due to paint delay:
Make sure to paint the wall soon after applying the putty. This helps lock in moisture and allows the putty to fully cure.
For partial areas cracking on the same wall:
Avoid applying the putty too thick. Apply in thin, even layers to keep the thickness consistent ans reduce stress from drying.
